요약Principal leadership is crucial to school improvement, staff development, and student achievement, especially in turnaround schools (Duke, 2012). As instructional leaders, principals develop and articulate school vision, set high expectations, provide content knowledge expertise, ensure effective instructional practices, and monitor progress (Cosner & Jones, 2016; Finnigan, 2012). Even though school principals do not have a direct influence on student learning in the classrooms, they influence other aspects of the school including the staff hiring process and planning for community involvement (Bartanen et al., 2019; Cosner & Jones, 2016; Finnigan, 2012; Winters et al., 2022). Fulfilling the responsibilities and accomplishing the goals of a principal is often a challenge for leaders of turnaround schools given their short tenure in their schools (Bartanen et al., 2019).Principal turnover is prevalent in low-performing schools, which are usually located in high-poverty and urban areas (Babo & Postma, 2017; Grissom & Bartanen, 2019; Mascall & Leithwood, 2010; Miller, 2013; Tran et al., 2018). High levels of principal turnover can make it hard to establish a cohesive school culture that forms the bases of instructional improvements, particularly in higher poverty schools that experience lower levels of academic growth. Principal turnover affects student achievement negatively (Babo & Postma, 2017; Brewer, 1993; Grissom & Bartanen, 2019; Mascall & Leithwood, 2010; Miller, 2013; Tran et al., 2018; Walsh & Dotter, 2018). The longer the principal stays at the school, the more stable and positive student achievement becomes (Walsh & Dotter, 2018; Miller, 2013).The study was conducted to examine the relationship between principal retention and student achievement in Title I schools and how that relationship differs in turnaround schools. The findings suggest that there was a positive association between principal retention and academic proficiency rates. No evidence was found that learning gains and lowest 25 learning gains are significantly higher with principal retention. There was no evidence found that those proficiency rates are even higher in turnaround schools with principal retention. There should be unified and comprehensive support for turnaround school principals from the federal and the state level to truly impact student achievement for students attending the lowest performing schools.
