- 요약How will growing immigration-driven diversity shape trust, cooperation and conflict in contemporary societies? The US continues to diversify rapidly. Recently, the Latino population surpassed Blacks as the largest minority group in the US, and Asian Americans are now the fastest-growing racial group. These demographic changes are occurring in tandem with the substantial decline in non-Hispanic White population. Public and scholarly debates have emerged about the societal impact of immigration-driven diversity. At the core of many of these debates are notions of trust and cooperation, which are fundamental for social cohesion. My dissertation is an inquiry into trust and cooperation on multiple levels. I ask, first, how and why does the salience of ethnoracial identities influence trust and cooperation in an increasingly diverse society? And second, what role do advocacy organizations play in promoting or constraining cooperation between ethnoracial groups? I answer these questions using novel data sources and innovative methods, including multiple behavioral experiments and administrative data, to identify social-psychological mechanisms and broader contextual effects.Using unique survey data, the findings from Chapter 2 show that while exposure to ethnoracial diversity in a community matter to some degree, the type and frequency of network ties that occur in these environments are far more consequential for trusting attitudes and race relations. Furthermore, immigrants and racial minorities experience diverse settings in distinct ways from White Americans because of higher levels of outgroup racial distrust, isolation, and perceived discrimination. Using behavioral game experiments combined with survey data, Chapter 3 advances the literature by illustrating how stereotypic behaviors and generalized reciprocity expectations shape trust and cooperation in the contemporary US. Using novel administrative data over time, in Chapter 4, I examine the changing nature of cooperation from 1971 to 2021 by analyzing the longitudinal networks of organizations. The main findings reveal a strong bond between Latino and Asian advocacy groups that goes beyond common issues and a general network structure that leaves Black organizations relatively peripheral. In chapter 5, I bring everything together and conclude by discussing implications and future directions for sociological research on ethnoracial diversity, trust, cooperation, and conflict.
