초록/해제
요약Fashion and sustainability can sometimes be compatible. Nonetheless, such intersections are seldom explored in the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) landscape. Drawing from insights of the sustainable HCI community and fashion-related work in HCI, I discuss the intertwining between fashion and sustainability in human-technology relationships. Fashion is both material and non-material. Material fashion encompasses tangible elements like clothing, accessories, or even technology when it is instrumental as a material of accessories. The non-material elements include prevailing ideologies and trends in society. The purposeful use of fashion can help achieve sustainable goals, such as reducing unnecessary purchases. Guided by this premise, my dissertation explores three design spaces, namely (1) how people maintain sustainable wardrobes, (2) how people give clothes to companion robots, and (3) long-term human-robot relationships. First, I probe the problem space of sustainable clothing practices by designing an interactive artifact designed to foster sustainability in wardrobe choices. Next, I evaluate the artifact by making scenarios in the form of roleplaying comics. In a second study, I examine the patterns of how people clothe their companion robots by looking at a large volume of Twitter data. Finally, I design a board game and deploy a series of game-based design workshops to explore how people make sustainable decisions during their long-term relationships with companion robots. Throughout this dissertation, I also summarize and discuss my findings, and draw meaningful implications for sustainability in these three specific design spaces.
