초록/해제
요약Purple (Cyperus rotundus L.) and yellow nutsedge (Cyperus esculentus L.) are the one of most troublesome weeds in Florida vegetable production. Nutsedge propagates by producing underground tubers, which are difficult to control with existing chemical or mechanical methods. This research aimed to evaluate a novel technique for mechanical tuber removal (MTR), its economics, and its impact on long-term nutsedge management. Multiple field trials evaluated MTR and its integration with glyphosate (GLY), cowpea cover crop (CC), and repeated MTR during the fallow period for its efficacy on nutsedge. Further, a greenhouse study evaluated the impact of herbicides (GLY, paraquat; PARA, s-metolachlor; DUAL) and a growth regulator (cytokinin) for their impact on breaking nutsedge tuber bud dormancy and apical dominance. The results from our research experiments demonstrated MTR and GLY were effective in significantly reducing the nutsedge density during the fall crop and resulted in 50% lesser tubers compared to non-treated (NT) at the end of the fall crop. Further, our research showed that the nutsedge control increased with the increased number of MTRs or MTR integration with GLY or CC. The integrated nutsedge management using 1-2 MTRs followed by GLY or CC during the fallow period of the first-year and cover crop planting during the fallow period of the second-year resulted in 77 % reduction in nutsedge density and tuber count relative to NT at the end of fall crop in the second-year. The greenhouse study revealed that cytokinin could break tuber bud dormancy. The economic analysis revealed that MTR during the fallow period cost $826 relative to $73 and $200 ha-1 for GLY and CC, respectively. It is important to note that the production cost increases proportionately with the increase in the number of MTRs or the integration of CC and GLY. Therefore, we recommend the growers adopt 1-2 MTR and integrate it with CC or GLY during the first year and then plant cover crop during the second-year fallow period to extend the effective nutsedge control duration till the end of fall crop in the second year.
