- 요약Choral concerts incorporating theatrical elements have become a trend in the United States and internationally. However, there is little academic literature written about staged choral performances and how choral directors can visualize and physicalize choral works. The purpose of this study is to provide choral conductors a sequential process for creating a staging concept and implementing it in rehearsals with the help of a blocking script. The following research questions have guided the study: (1) What are the components of the conductor's preparation before creating a staging concept of a choral masterpiece? (2) How do these components contribute to creating a staging concept? (3) How does one transform a concept into a document that increases rehearsal effectiveness? (4) What is the sequence of events in a rehearsal process? In April 2022, I was fortunate to be involved in a Bach St. John Passion project in Germany as a stage director. Although it was a fully-staged production, this adventure taught me that there is a potential to transform this work into a semi-staged production, which leads to a smaller budget and opens up opportunities for community choirs and college choirs to experience the beauty of choral theatre. This approach is universal to any choral works, from short octavo music to full-scale masterpieces. The study first identifies various components in a choral piece, such as the libretto, the performing forces, and the musical architecture, that can contribute to creating a staging concept, which can be the stage director's interpretation of space and time that the story takes place, the (re)characterization of the roles, or the distinctive emphasis of the plot. The objective of such concept is to bring relatability to the modern audience through reflection of the story. This study then adopts the prompt-book methodology and transforms the staging concept into a blocking script, which serves as a solid guideline when working with the performers and increases effectiveness in staging rehearsals. To conclude, this study suggests the sequence of events in the rehearsal process, so conductors will understand how to approach staging a choral piece from a practical perspective. Recommendations for further study are also listed for conductors who aspire to produce staged choral performances regularly.
