- 요약Parental alienation (PA) is a form of nonvoluntary family distancing wherein one parent employs maladaptive communication patterns to sever the relationship between the other parent and child(ren). Typically identified in separated or divorced families, PA alters the course of the parent-child bond across the lifespan. While multidisciplinary research has identified PA behaviors in families, little communication scholarship has examined this process, especially from a lifespan perspective. This three-study dissertation focuses on the alienated parent-child bond across the trajectory of PA and the potential reconnection process later in life. Drawing from recent communication research on family distancing, relational dialectics theory is used to better understand tensions encountered as they reconnect. Alienated parents and adult children who experienced PA and chose to reinitiate contact were recruited to participate in retrospective interviews. Studies one and three uncover turning points encountered across their PA relational trajectory from the alienated parent and adult child perspectives, respectively. Study two examines the reconnection phase of PA from the alienated parent perspective, elucidating relational dialectical tensions experienced as well as enacted communication management strategies. Findings contribute significant insight into the distinct relational communication and developmental trajectory of PA parent-child bonds-a marginalized parent-child bond experience. Collectively, findings provide rich translational research vital to building supportive resources for PA parent-child bonds that can help them reconnect and re-establish their relationship later in the lifespan.
