요약Use of e-cigarettes is a problem in college students and young adults. It is important to target prevention programs to adolescents and young adults to prevent individuals from ever initiating e-cigarette use. Readiness assessments for changes in health behaviors are a useful tool for developing and implementing prevention and intervention programing. Previous studies have focused on tobacco cessation readiness assessments and implementation of campus tobacco free policy readiness assessments, but little is known on vaping cessation readiness assessments. The Transtheoretical model, or stages of change, is a useful theory in determining individuals' readiness to implement a health behavior change. Many different factors may influence readiness to quit vaping including other substance use, perceived norms on the harms of vaping and secondhand vapor, campus tobacco policies, and ACE scores. The current dissertation used an online survey of Indiana University students to determine individual levels of e-cigarette use and their subsequent vaping cessation readiness level using the stages of change model. Results of this study for Aim 1 found that those who had ever used an e-cigarette had lower perceived risk to e-cigarette use and lower perceived harm from secondhand vapor exposure than those who had never used e-cigarettes. Additionally, those who were at lower stages of readiness perceived lower harm to secondhand vapor exposure than those at higher stages. Those who had ever vaped and those who were in the contemplation or preparation stage perceived the campus to be at higher levels of readiness to initiate vaping cessation programs compare to those who never have vaper or were in the precontemplation, action, or maintenance stage. Additional differences when exploring Aim 2 were identified in ACE scores, other substance use, and demographic characteristics on vaping status and stage of readiness, but the results were inconsistent between models. Future research should continue exploring how to increase perceived risks to e-cigarettes in young adults, while also identifying characteristics that make an individual to more likely to use e-cigarettes.
