- 요약Characterization of proton light yield (PLY) in organic scintillators is paramount for understanding their neutron response, since the primary method for neutron energy deposition is through neutron-proton (n-p) scattering within the scintillator. This enables the optimization of organic scintillator-based detectors and their applications in fast neutron detection. In this dissertation, the size-dependence of the PLY in organic scintillators was investigated, with the aim of demonstrating that, contrary to claims in the literature, the PLY of a given organic scintillator material is size-independent.Using quasi-monoenergetic neutrons produced by the tandem Van de Graaff accelerator located in the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratories and an array of liquid scintillator backing detectors, a coincidence neutron scatter kinematics technique was employed to characterize the PLY of 0.56 - 10 MeV recoil protons for several cubic volumes (8, 27, 64 and 125 cm3) of commercially available plastic organic scintillators EJ204 and EJ276 from Eljen Technologies. Using n-p scatter kinematics analysis enabled the association of light yield with a specific recoil proton energy without introducing spectrum fitting and simulation biases present in other PLY characterization methods widely applied in the literature. The light yield was represented in relative (electron equivalent) units by performing energy calibration using a coincidence Compton backscattering measurement. To support the high precision characterization of the organic scintillators, the linearity of the detector PMT response over the dynamic range of the measurement was studied using an LED pulser system. The relative PLY was in agreement within the estimated uncertainties for all characterized EJ204 volumes and all characterized EJ276 volumes. The uncertainty in recoil proton energy was estimated between 2-13 % . The uncertainty in PLY was estimated between 1 - 10% for EJ204, and 1.3 - 7% for EJ276. The measurement findings support the conclusion that the relative PLY of both EJ204 and EJ276 scintillators is, indeed, sizeindependent within the investigated size range. This result promotes the understanding of the scintillation behaviour of organic scintillators and has important consequences for the design and development of detectors using organic scintillators, as it enables the deduction of material-specific light yield functions and promotes greater flexibility in choosing scintillator size depending on the detection system design.
