■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  document  is  to  examine  contemporary  performance  practice  of  the  maracas  and  how  application  of  specific  techniques  can  prove  beneficial  to  standard  orchestral  and  modern  art  music  forms.  There  is  little  extant  pedagogy  in  the  field,  therefore  awareness  of  recent  trends  (emphasis  on  world  music  in  the  classical  percussion  curriculum)  will  hopefully  cultivate  new  options  and  ideas  concerning  interpretation  of  western  notation  and  performance  practice.It  is  important  to  understand  the  instruments  themselves-the  construction  and  physics  to  be  sure,  but  also  production  and  practice.  Maracas  come  in  many  different  forms,  so  it  is  essential  to  illuminate  options  including  mass  production  versus  those  made  by  hand.Perhaps  more  importantly,  a  brief  overview  of  traditional  Venezuelan  music  is  necessary  to  connect  culture  with  performance  practice.  Several  genres  of  Venezuelan  music  will  be  discussed  as  well  as  the  instruments  specific  to  those  genres.And  finally,  this  document  will  provide  guidance  regarding  adaptation  of  current  notation  and  their  application  to  significant  works  including  maracas.
