■520    ▼aFollowing  its  founding  in  2013,  Black  Lives  Matter  has  exerted  considerable  influence  on  socio-political  discussions  of  domestic  and  global  racial  inequalities.  While  the  social  movement  has  assumed  tremendous  cultural  prominence,  lay  and  academic  conceptions  of  the  movement  have  often  varied  dramatically,  the  movement  frequently  labeled  with  wide-ranging,  competing  ideological  connotations  of  radicalism,  grassroots  ethics,  corporatism,  and  generally  inchoate  partisan  underpinnings.  Moreover,  scholastic  analysis  of  BLM  has  often  bypassed  incorporation  of  public  opinion  data  aimed  to  explore  the  ways  in  which  domestic  citizens  express  comprehensive  sentiments  about  the  movement.In  the  attempt  to  address  these  considerations  from  a  public  opinion  perspective,  this  dissertation  utilizes  American  National  Election  Study  (ANES)  survey  data  collected  from  2016-a  pivotal  election  year  and  a  period  of  unique  organizational  momentum  for  BLM.  Across  three  empirical  chapters,  I  use  a  range  of  quantitative  methods  (regression  analyses,  goodness-of-fit  testing,  factorial  modeling,  supplementary  visual  charts)  to  attack  several  interrelated  inquiries:  1)  how  BLM  endorsement  reflects  respondents'  underlying  demographic  composition,  ideological  policy  preferences,  and  internalized  experiences  with  the  police;  2)  how  BLM  endorsement  influences  a  respondent's  likelihood  of  political  engagement;  3)  and  how  BLM  endorsement  factorially  arranges  alongside  other  "feeling-thermometer"  variables  examined  in  the  ANES.  In  the  process,  I  impose  diverse  mechanisms  to  assess  BLM  endorsement's  relationship  to  notions  of  mainstream  versus  outsider-status  partisanship.These  empirical  findings  suggest  that  BLM  endorsement  maintains  a  tight  statistical  linkage  to  respondents'  support  for  the  Democratic  Party  and  ideological  organizations,  movements,  and  cultural  attitudes  conventionally  tied  to  liberal-Democratic  constituencies.  At  a  more  nuanced  level,  these  data  showcase  a  stable  intra-party  story.  BLM  endorsement  consistently  predicts  and  correlates  with  a  mainstream-Democratic  partisan  worldview  as  compared  to  a  radical  or  outsider-status  partisan  worldview.  Though  BLM  endorsement  firmly  maintains  these  ideological  partisan  trends,  its  impact  on  actual  rates  of  political  engagement  proves  far  weaker.  Endorsement  for  BLM  holds  little  explanatory  power  in  predicting  likelihood  of  votership,  campaign  volunteerism,  media  attentiveness,  or  related  metrics  of  civic  involvement.These  results  help  resolve  questions  regarding  BLM's  typology  as  a  social  movement,  its  effect  on  political  engagement,  and  the  movement's  positionality  relative  to  institutionalized  or  radicalized  ideological  brackets.  In  the  process,  I  showcase  the  intersection  of  public  opinion  and  the  influence  of  mainstream  partisanship  in  the  socio-political  landscape  at  large.
