- 요약The aim of this multi-disciplinary research project was to identify and optimize organic-compliant cultural practices to support peach, and more broadly, tree fruit growers. This research evaluated strategies for fruit protection in situ with white and colored bags to improve fruit quality, and secondarily evaluated orchard floor management strategies to increase nutrient and soil moisture availability to improve tree and soil health. Compared to unbagged fruit, white bags did not affect nutrient concentrations in the peel, flesh, or pit; increased firmness by 31%, reduced mechanical injury by 48%, reduced fruit fly injury by 82%, reduced scab-like lesions by 89%; and reduced the incidence of brown rot by 9% and 17% at harvest and 7 days later, respectively. Compared to unbagged fruit, red bags increased firmness by 180% and green bags reduced peel chroma or color intensity. When bags remained on the fruit until harvest, unbagged fruit had 200% more anthocyanin concentration than fruit grown in white bags and 600% more than fruit grown in any colored bag. The inclusion of cover crops (cc) in citrus alleys increased total biomass in the winter by 130%, increased tissue nutrient concentration of N by 34% and Fe by 110%, and reduced weed biomass in the winter by 69%. They also reduced soil moisture in the citrus rooting zone by 3% and appeared to reduce leaching during the summer months. Additional research on yield and environmental trade-offs is needed to understand the long-term impacts of cc inclusion in perennial fruit alleys.
