초록/해제
요약This dissertation is an extensive ethnographic study of extra-institutional cybernetics and the first full length study of the grinder subgenre of biohacking and transhumanism. This dissertation greatly expands the scope of scholarship on transhumanism, the philosophy of using technology to surpass the limits of the human condition. This expanded understanding of transhumanism includes grassroots, community-based science, and self-experimentation. This punk or practical transhumanism turns toward the care of the earth and the exploration of human capabilities, such as using magnetic implants to expand the human sensorium. Practical transhumanism provides an alternative developmental trajectory to technocratic and philosophical transhumanisms favored by those intent on escaping the earth and mortality. My work brings together religious studies, media studies, American studies, gender studies and queer theory, disability studies, critical theory, South and East Asian studies, the social study of science and religion, and the anthropology of science and religion. My research methods are mixed, grounded in participant-observation ethnography, combined with the sociology of religion, critical science studies, and rhetorical analysis. In my studies of grassroots transhumanism, I have conducted more than five years of ethnographic data collection in person and online. This dissertation addresses two primary misconceptions about transhumanism, misconceptions that go well beyond Religious Studies and Theology. First, transhumanism is not just an otherworldly pursuit. My research shows an earthy, sensual transhumanism which treats death as more than an enemy. And second, this dissertation clears the way for a new history of transhumanism oriented away from white supremacist and eugenicist elites. This new history centers distributed grassroots networks, typically low-resourced, queer, disabled, and using extra-institutional science to pursue both survival and new ways of life.
