■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  examines  interstate  relations  between  ancient  Greek  poleis  situated  around  the  Aegean  Sea  in  the  fourth  century  BCE.    In  modern  scholarship,  non-hegemonic  city/states  are  often  ignored;  however,  by  using  social  network  analysis,  which  is  a  methodology  based  on  nodes  (poleis)  and  ties  (connections  between  poleis),  we  can  create  a  network  visualization  of  how  ancient  Greek  poleis  interacted  with  one  another  and  restore  agency  to  these  smaller,  often-overlooked  poleis.    The  networks  mapped  in  this  dissertation  represent  a  political  structure  that  the  Greeks  used  to  advance  their  political  interests  -  regardless  of  the  size  of  a  Greek  polis.    In  this  study,  a  hegemonic  polis  (Athens)  and  non-hegemonic  poleis  (Byzantium,  Chios,  and  Rhodes)  have  their  connections  noted  and  graphed,  and  the  network  maps  that  emerge  depict  how  Greek  city/states  of  all  sizes  could  manipulate  their  networks  to  advance  their  political  agendas.    By  restoring  agency  to  all  Greek  city/states,  the  way  we  understand  ancient  Greek  interstate  relations  becomes  more  than  a  hegemon-driven  narrative  into  one  in  which  all  poleis  affect  history.    The  interstate  relations  developed  in  this  period  will  be  the  basis  for  a  unified  Greece  under  Alexander  the  Great  and  enable  the  Hellenization  of  the  eastern  Mediterranean  for  the  next  several  centuries.
