■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  explores  the  dynamics  of  social  hierarchies  and  their  influence  on  collaborative  group  interactions.  Despite  extensive  research  on  hierarchy  in  social  interactions,  the  impact  of  various  status  dimensions  on  interpersonal  dynamics  and  group  outcomes  is  not  well  understood  yet,  partly  due  to  the  contextual  nature  of  status.  Therefore,  this  research  investigates  the  effects  of  multiple  status  characteristics  on  individual  and  group-level  outcomes  in  three  distinct  contexts.  The  research  comprises  three  empirical  chapters  that  utilize  the  Status  Characteristics  Theory  (Berger  et  al.,  1972)  as  a  theoretical  framework  to  investigate  how  relevant  status  characteristics  interact  to  affect  behavioral,  physiological,  and  affective  outcomes  in  dyads  and  groups.  The  first  two  chapters  explore  the  impact  of  gender  as  a  prominent  status  characteristic  in  combination  with  other  contextual  factors,  while  the  third  chapter  examines  the  generalizability  of  the  findings  to  other  stable  status  characteristics  beyond  gender.  In  Chapter  1  (N  =  113,  57  dyads),  we  analyze  real-time  interactions  between  students  and  peer  tutors  in  STEM  fields,  examining  how  gender  and  expertise  influence  affective  experiences  and  behavioral  engagement  during  the  interaction.  In  Chapter  2  (N  =  119,  31  groups),  we  experimentally  manipulate  leadership  ability  and  investigate  its  interaction  with  gender  to  assess  its  impact  on  persuasiveness  in  a  group  decision-making  task.  In  Chapter  3  (N  =  1,110,  370  groups),  we  move  beyond  gender  by  manipulating  a  status  characteristic  that  is  more  generalizable:  being  a  newcomer  to  a  group.  Specifically,  we  examine  how  being  a  newcomer  and  task-related  status  influence  group  decision-making  through  perceptions  of  competence,  linguistic  coordination,  and  utilization  of  unique  knowledge  possessed  by  group  members.  Overall,  this  dissertation's  findings  contribute  to  a  deeper  understanding  of  how  different  status  characteristics  combine  to  influence  social  interactions  in  collaborative  tasks,  shedding  light  on  their  effects  on  group  outcomes.  These  insights  have  practical  implications  in  various  contexts,  including  workplace  teams,  educational  settings,  and  other  collaborative  environments.
