초록/해제
요약Isang Yun was one of the first leading avant-garde composers of the 20th century. Born in 1917 in Korea, Yun experienced the Japanese colonial period, the division of Korea, and the Korean Conflict era. Throughout his life, much of it spent as a composer in Germany, he dedicated a significant portion of his musical endeavors to the reunification of Korea. This dissertation examines how Yun illustrates the division of Korea and reflects his hope for its reunification through the Double Concerto for Harp and Oboe (1977). Inspired by the Korean folktale, Gyeon-woo and Jik-nyeo (견우와 직녀) - a tragic love story between a cowherd and a weaver who are separated by the king's will and can only meet together once a year - the double concerto is one of the pieces Yun expressed his desire for reunification of Korea as the separation of the lovers represent the division of Korea. Furthermore, I argue that the double concerto also shadows Yun's own life as the cello solo seems to personify Yun himself. Weaving together the narratives of the folktale, the division of Korea, and Yun's life within the double concerto, the dissertation will let the readers experience a piece of Korean history and the composer's unfulfilled desire of reunification of Korea.
