- 요약Affective salience refers to the motivational significance of a stimulus due to its qualities that incentivise goal-oriented pursuit or defensive behavior(s). These mechanisms are particularly important for their evolutionary role in orienting organisms to potential rewards and threats, and relevance in psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression. However, studies of affective salience processing are typically conducted in tightly controlled, artificial experimental paradigms, potentially limiting generalizability in more dynamic, naturalistic scenarios. To address this limitation, three studies were conducted to examine aspects of affective salience processing in more dynamic environments. Study one interrogated the influence of task-irrelevant negative affective features (mutilations) on the neural evidence accumulation parameters underlying decision making. These parameters capture the decision dynamics and include the drift rate, or rate at which evidence is accumulated that is affected by the quality of evidence, and the decision threshold, or amount of evidence necessary to make a decision. Negative affect was related to a greater decision threshold and shallower drift rate (or slope), manifesting in longer decision times. The remaining studies employed a PACMAN-esque environment to investigate affective processing with simultaneous presence of threat and reward features. Study two focused specifically on threat and reward processing, uncovering greater neural sensitivity to threat relative to reward, and more distributed affective activity in visual and dorsal attention network regions that are largely absent in the broader affective literature. Study three explored conflict monitoring in situations both potentially appetitive or aversive due to the interaction of threat and reward features present. Although conflict comprises both, its neural profile shared extensive similarity to threat and broader activity was observed relative to contemporary studies of conflict. Together, these experiments advance our understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying affective salience processing under greater dynamic, naturalistic environments.
