요약Software tools based on machine learning are being touted as solutions to inefficiencies and labor shortages in a wide variety of industries, including agriculture and elder care. Data-driven insights promise to improve decision making in care work and reduce the need for human workers to monitor people, animals, and crops. The addition of these new software tools will also, inevitably, impact the experiences of workers. Therefore, it is vital to consider what values and perspectives are being centered or marginalized in the software design process, and how the resulting designs condition possibilities for meaningful and sustainable work. The makers of data-driven technologies claim that machine learning, with its ability to recognize patterns in vast amounts of data, can substitute for---and improve on---the experienced intuition that comes from intimately knowing a particular person or animal. In this dissertation, I introduce the concept of attunement to describe the process of learning and adjusting to a cared-for's needs through long-term engagement---a process that data-driven technologies promise to facilitate or render unnecessary.I explore the relationship between attunement and data in three studies spanning two settings: farm work and at-home elder care. In Study 1, I analyze the discourse of data-driven farming, asking what assumptions its proponents are making, what values they prioritize, and how power is distributed in their imagined futures. Study 2 explores multifaceted understandings of efficiency and care among people who do both farm work and computer-based knowledge work. Study 3 describes the information and coordination work that facilitates attunement between workers and clients in home-based dementia care. Throughout, I demonstrate the value of attunement for understanding care work and consider whether data-driven technologies can be implemented without undermining the relationships that make care work meaningful and care "good.".
