- 요약Public Engagement with Science (PES) is a popular topic in the science community due to general concerns about public support for science, attitudes toward science, and changes in scientific funding requirements. PES may be especially relevant in conservation disciplines as a holistic, ecological viewpoint could provide scientists additional motivation to engage the public to solve conservation problems. Herpetofauna, that is, reptiles and amphibians, specifically stand to benefit from PES, as direct exposure can improve attitudes and conservation behavior of participants toward uncharismatic species. I assessed the current scope of herpetologists' PES activities and investigated factors associated with their participation in PES. I utilized an adapted version of the Theory of Planned Behavior which included past PES experience and how herpetologists' view the role of the public in their work in addition to attitudes, norms, and perceived control. I conducted 60-minute semi-structured qualitative interviews with 15 herpetologists who regularly participate in PES. Transcripts were coded and analyzed using thematic analysis with expected and emergent codes. In the second phase, I distributed a closed-ended question survey via the listservs of four American herpetological organizations. Despite most responding herpetologists having limited formal training, time, resources, and institutional support, many participated in a variety of PES activities, often utilizing partnerships and their own resources. Herpetologists held strong outcome beliefs related to their involvement in PES activities which served as a major motive in their intent to participate. Survey participants also cited normative beliefs, noting that they felt an expectation to participate in PES activities and that many of their colleagues in the field were also involved in PES. Sampled herpetologists rarely evaluated their PES activities or considered publishing about their engagement activities. Some respondents expressed unease with the idea of message framing. Respondents were interested in evaluation training and providing accessible opportunities and grant funds were the most likely interventions to increase herpetologists' participation in PES. These results expand understanding of PES in applied conservation, particularly from the scientists' perspectives, and can be used to improve the quality of PES activities in the field in herpetology.
