- 요약This treatise presents a comparative study of selected works of Chen Yi and Andrea Clearfield, exploring their incorporation of Tibetan idioms in their compositions. The motivation for this study stems from the contrasting backgrounds of the two composers and their unique perspectives on music creation. The treatise begins with an overview of the background and motivation, followed by a brief introduction to Tibetan music. The subsequent chapters delve into the compositions of Chen Yi and Andrea Clearfield, analyzing their respective works and examining how they incorporate Tibetan elements. Chen Yi's compositions, namely Tibetan Tunes and China West Suite, are analyzed in Chapter Four, while Clearfield's works, Earth Door/Sky Door and Tse Go La Choral Suite, are examined in Chapter Five. Throughout the study, particular attention is given to the utilization of instruments and traditional Asian pentatonic modes in composing pieces inspired by Tibetan genres and the role of the piano in their compositions. By addressing these research questions, this comparative study offers insights into the specific Tibetan elements employed by both composers, taking into account their diverse cultural backgrounds and experiences. The treatise concludes by summarizing the findings and emphasizing the significance of their contributions to the representation and preservation of Tibetan music within the realm of Western classical compositions.
