초록/해제
요약Current generation synchrotron light sources provide unprecedented tools to study materials and their properties. The combination of very bright light and area detectors means that an outstanding quantity of data can be collected rapidly, enabling effective experiments during the growth of materials or while they are rapidly evolving due to external stimuli. Further, the high brightness allows for a high degree of spatial coherence to be selected in the beam, allowing coherent x-ray scattering techniques, such as X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy, which provide additional information on ordering in the samples. This thesis applies these exceptional tools to a variety of materials of current interest and emphasizes the development of analysis approaches that enable meaningful insight into growth mechanics and functional properties to be extracted from large and complex data sets. The growth of the  SrCrO3/SrTiO3 superlattice system, considered interesting due to a potential strain induced metal-insulator transition, was studied via in-situ x-ray reflectivity measurements, giving insight into the complex growth mechanics in this system. The growth of tantalum thin films, under extensive study for use as a quBit material, were studied with a variety of in-situ measurements, establishing ideal growth parameters and discovering their relaxation characteristic. In ferroelectric superlattices we studied the effect of evolving electrical boundary conditions on ferroelectric domains during the growth of ferroelectric/paraelectric PbTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices and the switching of domains driven by an electric field in several superlattice systems. The results on ferroelectrics highlight the potential for domain structure and switching behavior to be greatly modified by relatively small changes in growth parameters and procedures at critical points that can be identified by in-situ x-ray techniques.
