■520    ▼a"Conjuring  Unruly  Subjects"  is  a  critical  memoir  that  explores  the  stigmatized  practice  of  female  mediumship  in  both  its  supernatural  and  ordinary  forms.  Through  the  auto-ethnographic  narratives  of  my  Korean  shaman  family,  I  attempt  to  give  a  tangible  form  to  what  has  been  excluded  from  the  social-ideas,  forces,  or  bodies  that  do  not  easily  fit  in  categories  and  are  thus  rendered  invisible  like  ghosts.  My  goal  is  to  contaminate  the  sanitized  discourse  of  history  and  modernity  with  narratives  and  images  of  its  violent  traces  with  liberating  entanglement. The  haunting  stories  of  transgenerational  trauma  and  historical  violence  I  tell  here  point  to  the  unspeakable  that  makes  up  the  atmosphere  of  the  present.  Many  of  these  stories  are  often  about  mediation  of  such  spectral  trauma.  At  the  same  time,  they  are  also  mediums  through  which  people  make  sense  of  the  ghosts  they  carry.  Thus,  this  dissertation  itself  acts  as  a  mediating  body  through  which  I  summon  the  ghosts  and  perform  a  sense  of  haunting.  In  this  mimetic  attempt  to  closely  track  one's  object  of  study,  the  ghosts  appear  as  unknown  visitors  who  point  at  something  erased  and  hidden  in  a  palimpsest  that  is  the  present.Here,  I  approach  mediumship  not  only  as  a  specialized  practice  of  shamans  in  South  Korea  that  is  excluded  from  modernity,  but  more  broadly  as  an  ordinarily  poetic  experience  of  entanglement  and  alienation  that  is  part  of  modernity.  For  instance,  mothering  is  an  ordinary  yet  sacred  experience  that  many  non-shamans  embrace,  and  treating  it  this  way  is  a  rupture  that  allows  us  to  understand  mothering  as  an  expanded  mode  of  embodying  otherness.  To  draw  such  parallels  between  the  ghostly  and  the  normal,  I  tell  stories  that  are  often  not  what  they  seem;  they  acquire  a  multitude  of  parallel  meanings  and  associations  once  they  are  read  as  allegories  of something  else-being  dangerously  close  to  the  margin,  being  nowhere  and  everywhere,  being  indefinable,  and  thus  being  ungovernable  in  both  sacred  and  quotidian  ways.  In  this  way,  I  treat  the  supernatural  not  as  something  that  exists  elsewhere  but  as  something  very  ordinary  and  is  within  us,  in  our  mundane  world.
