요약Chapter 1, coauthored with Volodymyr Lugovskyy and Alexandre Skiba, evaluates the impact of the upcoming U.N.'s International Maritime Organization regulation that caps CO2 maritime freight shipping emissions scheduled to take effect in 2023 (henceforth, IMO2023). IMO2023's CO2 standards and implementation timeframe will likely cause reductions in containerized shipping speed and so reduce effective short-term capacity. With a focus on US containerized imports, we structurally estimate an import demand model where consumers choose transport mode based on prices and preference for timely delivery. We use the model to show that narrow regulatory focus on carbon efficient maritime transportation will cause demand substitution towards less carbon efficient air transport. IMO2023 will likely cause between a 21 to 28 percent net increase in import related emissions, while also decreasing consumer surplus between 5.2 to 8.8 billion USD. We conclude by showcasing welfare-enhancing policy alternatives such as technological improvements and carbon taxes.Chapter 2 explores the impacts of the 2016 expansion of the Panama Canal on US import patterns. Leveraging shipping microdata, ranging from route itineraries to satellite tracking to bill of lading data, I use a canonical difference in difference estimator to show the Panama Canal Expansion (PCE) led to a 6 percent increase in containerized US imports. Finally, I use and calibrate an Eaton-Kortum style model to analyze the welfare impacts of the PCE on internal and external US trade. I find that the PCE lowered trade costs for affected routes by 1.4 percent and boosted US real manufacturing incomes by 4.8 billion USD.Chapter 3 concludes by applying a network model of strategic complementarities to article publishing dynamics of academic economists. I assemble and synthesize both academic family-tree and co-author network dataset. I show that eliminating gendered differences in Katz-Bonacich centrality within the family-tree network reduce gender publication bias by more than 90 percent.
