- 요약Feeding high-protein feedstuffs and applying high rates of nitrogen fertilizer have raised concern in horse operations due to their potential environmental impacts. Therefore, best management practices such as feeding lower protein feed and incorporating legumes into grass pastures may contribute to more sustainable operations. The overarching objective of these studies was to evaluate the potential of rhizoma peanut (RP) to decrease nitrogen inputs while maintaining animal performance and welfare by including RP as either hay (Experiment 1, Chapter 3, 4, and 5) or pasture (Experiment 2, Chapter 6) in the diet of maintenance horses compared to common forage sources in the southern U.S. Experiment 1 evaluated the effect of RP on hay digestibility and nitrogen balance compared to alfalfa (ALF) and bermudagrass (BMG) hays. Legume hays provided more nutrients (P 0.0001) and were more digestible (P 0.0001) than BMG. ALF resulted in greatest (P 0.0001) nitrogen excretion and BMG the least. Alfalfa resulted in nitrogen retention greater (P = 0.0377) than BMG, and RP did not differ from ALF and BMG. Experiment 2 evaluated the effect of RP on feeding behavior and preference compared to ALF and BMG. Alfalfa resulted in longer (P = 0.0037) leisure time compared to RP and BMG, while RP did not differ from BG. Alfalfa was the most preferred (P 0.0001) hay, followed by RP, and BMG. Experiment 3 evaluated the effect of RP, ALF, and BMG on biomarkers of health status. No difference (P 0.05) was observed in fecal pH, dry matter, and lactate among the hays. While alfalfa resulted in glycemic, insulinemic, and plasma urea nitrogen responses greater (P 0.05) than BMG, RP did not alter those responses. Experiment 4 investigated the effect of incorporating RP (RP-BG) into bahiagrass (BG) pastures with low N rates compared to highly fertilized (FER-BG) or unfertilized (UNF-BG) monoculture bahiagrass pastures on herbage and animal responses. Intercropping RP into BG resulted in greater (P 0.05) crude protein digestibility in the late season. Not including RP or applying nitrogen fertilizer results in greater (P 0.05) weed proportion in botanical composition later in the season. In conclusion, providing horses with RP as either hay or incorporated into warm-season pastures can provide more sustainable management practices in horse operations with decreased off-farm nitrogen inputs while maintaining horse welfare and nutrition.
