초록/해제
요약My dissertation focuses on the various intersections of political and theatrical representation in the nineteenth century. In particular, I investigate the appearances of the people in German-speaking drama, studying their transformative effects on dramatic forms. When the people enter the scene, I argue, their revolutionary potential translates into theatrical form; their appearance not only challenges the concept of sovereignty and individual agency but the very notion of a or one dramatis persona. In my chapters on Friedrich Schiller, Georg Buchner, and Gerhart Hauptmann, I offer a threefold contribution to the field of German studies. I analyze the people as an entity yet to appear on stage and thus challenge their traditional presentation as dramatis personae (Hannelore Schlaffer). By demonstrating that the people present the limits of theatrical representation, I examine how the ancient chorus re-emerges as a theatrical figuration of multitudes in nineteenth-century drama. Dissecting the problem of collective appearances on the level of the scene, the verse, and the procedures of entrances and exits, I illuminate the intersection of politics and aesthetics by way of close reading.
