- 요약The Family Check-Up (FCU) is a brief, school-based intervention that uses motivational interviewing (MI) to enhance motivation for goal-directed change in parenting. Mechanisms of MI refer to the mechanisms through which MI, an evidence-based therapeutic approach, is thought to produce positive client outcomes. A mechanisms of MI framework suggests that MI is an important contributor to positive parent and child outcomes in the FCU, but few studies have empirically tested if this is the case. The present study examined mechanisms of MI in the FCU. Participants were a subsample of parents (n =136) and teachers (n = 36) of children from the FCU intervention condition of a randomized controlled trial of the FCU implemented during the transition to kindergarten. The subsample included only parents who participated in an FCU feedback session during their child's kindergarten year. FCU feedback sessions were coded with the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity code (MITI; n =109) and Client Language Easy Rating coding system (n = 112) to measure FCU therapist MI proficiency and the proportion of parent change talk, respectively. Study results suggest that FCU therapists met the MITI Fair threshold for Technical Global, Relational Global, and Percent Complex Reflections and the Good threshold for Reflection-to-Question Ratio. Results provide partial support for hypothesized mechanisms of MI in the FCU. As hypothesized, Technical Global was associated with a higher proportion of parent change talk, Percent Complex Reflections was associated with higher parent-reported limit setting in first grade, and Total MI Non-Adherent was associated with higher teacher-reported child social, emotional, and behavioral problems in first grade. Unexpectedly, Total MI Adherent was associated with a lower proportion of parent change talk. Implications for research and practice, study limitations, and future directions are discussed.
