초록/해제
요약For many professors of classical percussion, drum set instruction is considered a crucial component of a thorough curriculum, as it generally presents percussion students the most frequent opportunities for employment and involves the honing of skills that benefit all facets of percussion performance. However, for percussion students at many universities, whose private lessons and performance activity are primarily focused on orchestral percussion performance, practical and thorough drum set instruction is not provided. This is typically due to limited drum set experience of the instructor(s); insufficient funding for instruments, facilities, or additional faculty members to provide drum set instruction; or a lack of time to address drum set instruction due to the variety of standard classical percussion instruments that must be taught. In this treatise, input from current university percussion professors, collected via a survey and interviews, has been synthesized to determine learning objectives for classical percussionists studying drum set. An accessible and adaptable drum set curriculum for classical percussion students has been proposed, along with suggested augmentations to assist with providing instruction of drum set concepts within existing classical percussion curricula. These contributions aim to illustrate the most necessary areas of drum set instruction so that classical percussionists can increase their employability, overall musicianship, and involvement in their percussion studio and university music department.
