■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  is  the  result  of  ethnographic  engagement  with  self-identified  meme  groups  on  the  social  media  site  Facebook.  That  engagement  and  personal  experience  are  leveraged  to  question  previous  scholarship  produced  by  folklorists  specifically  and  adjacent  disciplines,  such  as  communications  and  media  studies,  broadly,  and  through  critique  and  ethnographic  insight,  demonstrate  an  approach  to  the  study  of  internet  memes  that  produces  more  nuanced  understanding.  I  review  how  the  term  meme  has  been  used  in  the  social  sciences  and  interrogate  how  the  coining  of  the  term  as  a  sort  of  cultural  gene,  created  and  reinforced  preconceived  notions,  which  are  expressed  through  biological  metaphor,  that  equate  success  with  spread  and  fitness  in  a  competitive  environment  and  thus  determine  which  memes  are  "successful  enough"  to  study.  I  provide  a  brief  history  of  the  internet  as  context  for  a  description  of  Facebook  as  an  ethnographic  field  site  in  which  users  navigate  anthropomorphized  algorithms  and  other  non-human  identified  actors.  I  analyze  how  people  conceptualize  memes  by  looking  at  how  the  term  is  applied  to  pre-internet  materials.  And  in  tracing  similarities  in  form  and  content  between  pre-internet  humor  and  internet  memes  I  demonstrate  that  demarcation  between  online  and  offline  culture  hides  interesting  cultural  continuities.  Memes  are  an  intertextual  genre  and  I  argue  that  they  rely  on  audience  decoding  to  generate  meaning  and  the  feeling  of  relatability  using  the  meme  Loss.jpg  as  a  case  study.  I  then  use  the  annual  sharing  of  the  meme  "Frogs  and  Cranberries,  Must  be  Fall"  in  the  group  Wild  Green  Memes  for  Ecological  Fiends  to  illustrate  how  memes  are  traditional  in  the  created  from  the  forces  of  conservatism  and  dynamism,  and  become  traditionalized  in  the  way  that  members  talk  about  the  memes  and  imagine  meme  performances  into  the  future.  Both  performing  the  tradition  and  traditionalizing  that  performance  create  a  sense  of  community.
