- 요약My project focuses on the compositional and stylistic development of Charles Tomlinson Griffes's piano music, especially on his Three Tone Pictures, Op.5, the Sonata in D-flat major A.64, and the Sonata A.85. Griffes has often been categorized as the "American Impressionist" with one of his most famous works "The White Peacock" being considered by many to exemplify the style. In fact, his compositions do not all fit the "Impressionistic" label. His early style shows strong German Romantic tendencies; his works beginning in about 1911 exhibit strong influences from French Impressionism and the music of the Far East; and finally the late period demonstrates Neoclassical and Modernist tendencies. He spent his entire career exploring and improving his style, an evolutionary process that I would like to discuss in detail. One of the difficulties I faced in this research was the fact that none of Griffes's four early sonatas are published, and the scores are not available in school music libraries or online databases. However, some information about these works is still available thanks to the research of American musicologist Donna K. Anderson, who devoted her professional life to studying Griffes. I learned that the four early piano sonatas are collected at the New York Public Library and found the manuscripts there. My project consists of five chapters. Chapter One will talk about Griffes's general background, his three compositional styles, and his piano works. Chapter Two will analyze the works I'm focusing on and provide structural, rhythmic, and harmonic analysis of each work. Chapter Three will include a performance guide, focusing on technical issues, fingering and pedaling questions, and suggestions for pianists with small handspans. Chapter Four will compare different editions of the scores and list some of the recordings. Chapter Five will serve as a conclusion, putting these works into the context of Griffes's overall career and the piano literature of his era.
