- 요약This dissertation examined how to improve home visit quality for families with toddlers living in poverty. In three distinct but related empirical studies, this dissertation highlights different ways in which a new preventive intervention, Recipe 4 Success, which was embedded within Early Head Start, enhanced home visit quality to better promote parent and toddler functioning. The first study aimed to assess heterogeneity in home visits and determine whether participating in Recipe 4 Success was associated with higher quality home visits. Findings revealed that 88% of families randomly assigned to participate in Recipe 4 Success as part of Early Head Start received high-quality home visits, compared to only 39% of families randomly assigned to continue to receive usual practice home visits. The second study aimed to understand whether Recipe 4 Success could enhance parent and toddler functioning among families with whom home visitors were still developing an optimal working alliance. This study found that Recipe 4 Success improved multiple aspects of parents' sensitive scaffolding and toddlers' self-regulation among such families. The third study aimed to examine how implementation fidelity to Recipe 4 Success was related to family enjoyment of home visits and how both fidelity and enjoyment were related to improvements in parent and toddler functioning. Results showed that both fidelity and enjoyment are important in promoting family change. Taken together, this dissertation contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the nuances of home visit quality. The findings from these studies helped identify new ways in which home visiting programs can engage in continual quality improvement so all families can benefit even more.
