초록/해제
요약Mixtures of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) (KBG) and cold-tolerant hybrid bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. x C. transvaalensisBurtt Davy] (HB), sometimes referred to as "bluemuda", have received interest from turfgrass managers in the transition zone of the United States as a means of maintaining green turf in cold weather without overseeding. The objectives of this research were to develop methods of establishing a KBG/HB mixture, and to determine species fluctuations throughout multiple growing seasons. Three field studies were conducted in two locations, University Park and Reading, PA. The first study was initiated in June of 2020 and involved establishment of 'Tahoma-31' HB by placement of sprigs in strips or distributed randomly into plots of 1-yr-old 'HGT' KBG following aeration and slicing. The second study was a continuation of the sprigging establishment study and evaluated HB and KBG fluctuations over two growing seasons. The third study, which, involved slicing 'Tahoma-31' sod in either one or two directions, followed by seeding 'HGT' KBG at 147 and 294 kg·ha-1 in Sept. 2021, and again in Sept. 2022. Species fluctuations were assessed for this fall overseeding study over a two-year period in experiments conducted in University Park and Reading. All experiments for each of the three studies were mowed twice-per-week at 2.54 cm. Percent ground cover utilizing point-intercept assessment and digital image analysis was performed in the establishment study, while percent species assessments through pointintercept and digital imagery assessments were performed in the species fluctuation after sprigging study and the fall overseeding study. Results of the establishment study revealed that sprigging HB into entire KBG plots killed with glyphosate achieved 99 to 100% HB ground cover in less than 45 days. However, sprigging HB into KBG not treated with glyphosate resulted inonly 23.5 to 29.5% HB, which appeared as scattered patches throughout plots. Sprigging HB into glyphosate- or glufosinate-treated strips in KBG plots allowed HB to establish in the strips, but only minor encroachment of HB occurred into the non-herbicide treated portions of the plots. Results of the second study revealed that over two years, HB sprigged into KBG not treated with herbicide and HB sprigged into herbicide-treated strips resulted in excessive patchiness and a prominent striped appearance, respectively. Results of the fall overseeding study indicated improved stand uniformity and seasonal species transition following seeding KBG into an existing stand of HB when compared with sprigging HB into KBG. Shifts in species dominance were dramatic according to season and over multiple years, with HB dominating the mixture in summers (65 - 99%) and KBG the prevailing species during spring (51 - 94%). The most practical implementation of a KBG/HB mixture according to the methods of establishment used in these studies would be for a turf surface receiving heavy use in summer, and/or light use in early fall and/or late spring. This may include a multi-use sports field, practice field, band rehearsal field, or a golf course driving range.
