- 요약Initial consonant mutation is a distinctive phenomenon in Irish grammar that has long been of interest to linguists of a variety of backgrounds for its unique position at the interface of phonology and morphosyntax (Hamp 1951; Martinet 1952; O Cuiv 1986). Once thought to be governed purely by a set of morphophonological correspondences, accumulating evidence suggests that the production of initial consonant mutation is subject to variation. The reasons for this remain to be fully understood (Welby et al. 2011; Frenda 2011; Lenoach 2012; Petervary et al. 2014; Muckley 2016; Welby et al. 2017; Frenda 2018; Muller et al. 2019; Antonijevic et al. 2020; Nic Fhlannchadha and Hickey 2021; McCullough 2022).The heart of the dissertation is to ask whether the variable realization of words in mutable environments is largely predictable, and if so, how this can be understood (Dillon 1973; Stockman 1988; Maguire 1991; McGuigan 2016; Welby et al. 2017). In this dissertation, I analyze some ways that Irish speakers use initial consonant mutation and identify factors that contribute significantly to variation in initial consonant mutations. Noting that mutation is cross-linguistically an uncommon feature, and Irish an endangered language context, the result of this dissertation is to cast light on the phenomenon and the sources and significance of variation manifest within it. Many, but not all, of the forces shown to have substantial effects on ICM are extragrammatical (Coetzee and Pater 2011). The strength and structure of these effects, coupled with the long-standing challenges in accounting for ICM without treating these, support the adoption of a usage-based theory of language such as exemplar-based phonology.
