초록/해제
요약Robust associations between personality traits and various forms of psychopathology have been well-established in both adults and youth. However, focusing on personality only at the broad trait level may mask more complex and nuanced patterns of links between personality and psychopathology. A complete understanding of these relationships requires attention to personality at a more comprehensive level, including average levels of personality traits, variability in traits, and the cognitive and affective factors that compose traits or influence their behavioral presentations. In this dissertation, I leverage innovative perspectives on personality measurement to gain a more comprehensive understanding of personality-psychopathology associations in youth. A secondary goal is to illustrate the use of multiple research and analytical methods to examine these associations more comprehensively than a single method can offer. In this vein, Study 1 investigates whether - beyond average levels of personality traits - variability in children's personality is meaningfully associated with psychopathology. Study 2 parses personality from cognition to examine whether psychopathology is more etiologically connected to cognitive-based versus personality-based indices of self-regulation. Finally, Study 3 parses affective components from personality measures to examine whether individual differences in trait-level affect can reliably differentiate aggression motives, both at the variable level and the individual child level. Together, these studies demonstrate how integrating multiple perspectives on personality measurement can contribute to a more nuanced and thorough understanding of personality-psychopathology associations.
