- 요약Across the late 20th and into the soon-ending first quarter of the 21st century, many changes have occurred in American culture, music, and schools. Americans connect to music in their daily lives in rapidly changing, modern, and participatory ways. The population is becoming more diverse, and, with this, critical questions have made room for discussions on how to make practices in life and in schools more equitable. As music teacher educators grapple with how to prepare pre-service educators to engage with new student populations and new cultural dynamics, applied instructors can also consider how their approaches to lesson and studio class instruction can guide their pre-service music educator students towards professional identities as equitable, inclusive, and multimusical educators. In this document, five topics are discussed: composition, improvisation, New Orleans music (as a multicultural and aural-based tradition), music technology, and popular music. These topics include three sections: "Why?" which justifies the inclusion and highlights pedagogical advantages that are gained from developing skills in the given topic; "How?" which describes pedagogical suggestions for implementation of these topics; and "Applications" which provides suggestions for lessons, learning outcomes, and/or evaluation for applied instructors. This document should serve as a means by which applied instructors imagine a broader set of musical activities and skills that could be incorporated in lessons for their pre-service music educator students, in turn preparing them to enter the workforce more prepared to be equitable, inclusive, and multimusical educators.
