- 요약The Tantra of the Sun's revelation and reception as well as its contents reflect a kind of creative engagement with time that was integral to Nyingma identity formation in the thirteenth to fourteenth centuries when Tibet was undergoing tremendous social and political changes. The Tantra of the Sun co-emerged with a new Heart Essence cycle, the Heart Essence of the Ḍakinis, whose revelatory history is directly connected to Padmasambhava, and marked by an increased emphasis on the feminine in terms of non-human ḍakinis, and female figures like Yeshe Tsogyel and Princess Pemasel associated with its revelation. The 113-chapter version of the Tantra of the Sun translated for this study similarly mirrors this emphasis on the feminine with its cast of main characters being Samantabhadri and the ḍakinis. Throughout the Heart Essence of the Ḍakinis, the Tantra of the Sun became known as the eighteenth member of the scriptural set known as the Seventeen Tantras (rgyud bcu bdun),which formed the basis for the early Heart Essence tradition, especially the Heart Essence of Vimalamitra. One of the questions that this dissertation seeks to answer is: What did the addition of the Tantra of the Sun as a major source text mean for Heart Essence literature thereafter, especially with regard to Tibetan Treasure revelations and the Heart Essence tradition's own constructions of scriptural authority? Another purpose of this dissertation is to consider "Heart Essence literature through time" by using the Tantra of the Sun as a case study. In this regard, my work revolves around two main questions. 1) Why is the Tantra of the Sun a pivotal scripture for the emergence of the Heart Essence of the Ḍakinis? 2) How does Heart Essence literature, vis-a-vis the Tantra of the Sun, understand and engage with notions of time? The "through time" part of my dissertation title holds a dual meaning. On the one hand, I wish to suggest that as the pivotal scripture for the blossoming of the Heart Essence of the Ḍakinis, the Tantra of the Sun is a critical window for understanding Heart Essence developments over time. A close study of the tantra reveals the ways in which it recalls earlier Heart Essence ideas, but builds upon them and departs from them to create something new but which still constitutes "Heart Essence." On the other hand, "through time" implies that the tantra itself, at the level of its own content as well as its origin story, partakes in diverse strategies of temporal manipulation that help cultivate nuanced temporal sensibilities in the reader. In other words, there is a way in which the narrative structure of the Tantra of the Sunself-consciously reflects its doctrinal point-that the time of straying into saṃsara and the time of liberation do not represent two different points in time. Rather, the tantra maneuvers language and narrative structure in ways that suggest that liberative possibility has the potential to rupture forth at any moment of saṃsara's story.
