- 요약The purpose of this treatise is to survey eight of the Ten Fanfares by Ten Composers for Brass and Percussion commissioned by Maestro Eugene Goossens and the Cincinnati Symphony for performance use throughout the 1942-43 season. Eighteen composers responded with fanfares for different combinations of instruments. Ten feature brass and percussion exclusively. Composers included in this commission consist of prominent figures such as Aaron Copland, Howard Hanson, Virgil Thompson, Paul Creston, among others. This treatise revitalizes the importance of these chamber works as an addition to the brass ensemble repertoire, the larger diaspora of twentieth century American music, and how the underlying connection(s) between musical performance and politics have cultural implications that shape and manifest various outlooks on citizens within a nation. In addition to exploring the historical and cultural context and legacy of these works, this document serves to invite greater discussion within arts organizations about the importance of programming lesser-known works for the sake of greater representation. These fanfares are less than a century old and many of these works have not seen a proper performance since their original premieres in the 1940s. The research and explanations in this treatise intend to bring greater exposure surrounding their purpose and effect in hopes of these fanfares utilized for performance into the twenty-first century.
