초록/해제
요약Though much civic engagement literature suggests the theoretical importance of civic identity, there are few empirical studies testing the relations between digital storytelling and positive tribal youth civic identity development and its role in promoting civil society among American Indian youth. Central to this research is the need to understand the perspectives of tribal youth in regards to their own positive civic identity development facilitated by digital media use within the context of their ecology. In order to address the research questions related to this study, Indigenous research methods, Indigenous systems thinking, existing positive youth development (PYD) models focusing on civic engagement, youth civil society conceptual frameworks, and literature on how youth-led media promotes civic engagement and civil society for Indigenous youth will be triangulated to aid in the development of a culturally-relevant positive tribal youth development model. The PYD model provides a necessary framework for this research inquiry because the application of the developmental systems thinking approach coupled with the human ecological perspective provides opportunities for advancing theory and research within the scholarly community. Indigenous research methods will be the most useful and important theoretical model for inquiry because it brings forward the epistemology and ontology of Indigenous peoples while providing a critical understanding of the local Indigenous context that will be useful in the development of an Indigenous conceptual model relative to positive tribal youth development.
