초록/해제
요약Institutions are one of the fundamental causes of economic performance, a source of comparative advantage, and a determinant of foreign investment. The overarching theme of this dissertation is the role that contract enforcement institutions play in international trade and global production. Chapter 1 develops the model of input sourcing under contracting frictions and multiple and heterogeneous providers. This framework is then extended and applied to the international trade and multinational production settings in Chapters 2 and 3, respectively. Chapter 2 inserts this model into a multi-sector and multi-country model which leads to a series of predictions regarding the multiple ways in which contract enforcement institutions can affect trade patterns, which are then empirically tested. Evidence is found to support most of the theoretical predictions of the model. Finally, chapter 3 uses a simplified version of the model to explain and test the differential performance of foreign multinationals relative to domestic firms in Mexico's manufacturing sector. The main hypothesis is that the advantage enjoyed by foreign affiliates in Mexico may not entirely be due to higher productivity, but other advantages such as being less sensitive to contracting frictions or having better supplier and buyer networks worldwide. I found that the role played by these additional factors is not negligible, although productivity remains the main factor behind the gap between foreign and domestic firms.
