- 요약Though lead is a well-known neurotoxicant, extant studies examining the associations of prenatal lead on offspring cognitive and socioemotional functioning have been inconsistent in their observed affected domains, suggesting that contextual factors may modify the toxicity of lead on fetal neurodevelopment (Bellinger, 1995). This compilation of studies explores how social and physiological contextual factors co-occur with prenatal lead exposure and may contribute to the heterogeneity of the associations of prenatal lead on child outcomes. This project relies on data from the Brain and Early Experience (BEE) Study, an analytic cohort of 201 mother-child dyads participating from mid-pregnancy through early childhood. I examine associations between prenatal urinary lead and child language, effortful control, and negative affect within three contexts: the prenatal social context (Study 1), a prenatal physiological context (Study 2), and a postnatal social context (Study 3). In Study 1, I explored latent profiles of prenatal exposure to lead and socioeconomic, psychological, and physical health stressors. I uncovered three prenatal latent profiles, characterized as psychologically stressed, socioeconomically stressed, and advantaged, and I found that prenatal latent profile membership was differentially related to children's early language skills and negative affect. In Study 2, I tested whether maternal prenatal microbiota diversity mediates or moderates the associations of prenatal urinary lead on child outcomes. I found weak evidence that prenatal lead predicted higher microbiota diversity and that the negative association of prenatal lead on child language was conditional upon mothers having high prenatal microbiota diversity. In Study 3, I examined whether positive caregiving or cognitive enrichment experienced in infancy could buffer the associations of prenatal lead on child outcomes. Results revealed that high cognitive enrichment postnatally mitigated the associations of prenatal lead on early child language skills. Within this perinatal cohort, lead exposure and its moderators, microbiota diversity and cognitive enrichment, were not highly correlated with socioeconomic indicators. Findings from these studies can inspire future research and intervention efforts into how social and physiological contextual factors could be leveraged to buffer the toxic effects of prenatal lead on fetal neurodevelopment.
