- 요약This research examines the role of desalination in the process of urbanization. The focus of the investigation is Kuwait, a country situated within a region containing some of the highest levels of water stress and per capita consumption around the world. The aim is to reveal the spatialization of desalination infrastructure, its underlying ecological epistemology, and the historic urbanization patterns that it has generated and will continue to perpetuate into the future. In doing so, this research will reveal a novel view of water politics that is less focused on crisis and scarcity to instead examine the spatial practices that inform water management and consumption from the extraction of salt water to the metabolism of potable water in everyday household use.Desalination is a process through which water is extracted from the sea and processed to remove salt and impurities resulting in potable water. It is a technology that is not well understood by the everyday water consumers of Kuwait since they have little interaction with the processes of water, their only experience is receiving it in the taps in their homes. Meanwhile, desalination plants face many technological, cost, and environmental limitations. Yet, critiques of this technology are often focused on the efficiencies and ecological impacts that sites of extraction present. This research looks towards another locus of concern, expanding outwards from the sites of extraction to spatialize the impacts of desalination, the water it produces and the urban spaces it generates. By spatializing the metabolisms of desalination, this research critiques underlying political and social structures and asks how their reformation can lead to better ecological and urbanization processes in the future. In doing so, it reveals strategies for the emancipatory production, distribution and use of water within urban space.Desalinated water is provided to Kuwaiti citizens at little cost. This creates a paradox between the risk and labor in the production of desalinated water and the environmental imaginaries that drive high rates of consumption, ultimately driving water intensive urbanization processes. This research will trace this paradox starting with the history of desalination infrastructure and urbanization from the era of early state formation into the future imagination of the city and its resources. An analysis of the development of desalination and it's the expanding metabolism of water will show the impact of this expansion on the urban forms and the spatial structures that have evolved within the city today. A contemporary analysis of the urban water cycle will trace the flow of water from the sites of extraction through the urban water supply system, and eventually to the homes of residents. This will provide evidence of the ways through which water has structured society from the management of water to the socio-spatial structures of the home. I will use ethnographic fieldwork, historic accounts, and media reflections, to reveal the everyday practices of this water and its invisible space of labor, risk, and energy.
