초록/해제
요약On what grounds can agents morally criticize the social practices or policies of their own society? Can agents be justified in morally criticizing the social practices or policies found in other societies? When is the moral condemnation of societies' social practices or policies unreasonable? My dissertation aims to address these questions by developing an account of agents' methods of inquiry into the moral status of societies' social practices and/or policies - one which acknowledges the central role of democratic public discourse in agents' inquiries into political matters - that would enable principled distinctions to be drawn between morally reasonable and unreasonable political viewpoints.I claim that acknowledging individuals' access to multiple viewpoints requires deconceptualizing the proceedings of public discourse. Instead of viewing public discourse as a process in which each person presents her own viewpoint to have it either accepted or rejected by the other participants, I argue that this discourse is better able to serve a justificatory role when individuals use this to familiarize themselves with the alternative worldviews of others and critically compare these different options. As a result, the aim of such discourse would be for agents to collaboratively work with others in their society to figure out what worldviews are available to them, what adjustments would be necessary to make each of these worldviews more reasonable, and how to determine when certain worldviews are significantly less reasonable than others that are available to them.
