요약Among the strategies dominant groups employ to sustain hierarchy, ideology - defined here as a system of symbols, rhetoric, and ideas - has received less attention from political scientists than other tools used to maintain dominance. This dissertation fills this gap, exploring the conditions under which dominant groups deploy ideology to maintain their status, how the drivers of ideological mobilization relate to drivers of other tools of repression, how gender factors into the use of ideological tools, and the consequences of challenging ideologies of dominance and dismantling their associated symbols. In answering these questions, this dissertation offers theoretical insights and a mix of empirical and qualitative evidence using the case of both the past and present American South. The first paper finds that Southern white elites (the United Daughters of the Confederacy) mobilized around disseminating a compensatory "Lost Cause'' ideology to Southern whites where there was high intra-group inequality and out-group competition. The second paper finds that UDC chapters also mobilized around preserving traditional gender hierarchy and were more likely to emerge where there were sizable shocks to Southern white male status, honor, and reputation, as proxied by Confederate battle losses. The last paper explores the consequences of removing Confederate symbols in the present, finding reductions in racial animosity in both attitudinal and behavioral outcomes in localities that are proximate to sites of removals. Across these essays, this dissertation provides important implications for the study of ideology, group status, historical memory and symbolic politics and shows the ideological means by which hierarchical systems are sustained, even when the formal legal structures are dismantled.
