To aid in solving the "backwardness" of the country, Brazil encouraged an era of embranquecimento during the mid to late nineteenth century into the early twentieth century where European immigrants migrated to regions in Sao Paulo to help whiten the population and race. Among those who relocated were Confederate families after the U.S. Civil War, along with a selected number of forced African Americans, in efforts to restore a Dixie Life with enslavement and continue their ideas of Manifest Destiny. While there has been much research discussing the livelihood of such Confederate families, later named Confederados, there has been little evaluation of how Afro-Brazilians responded to this migration. My research focuses on how identity formation was affected by such embranquecimento from 1865 to 1915, and how any interactions with African Americans influenced ideas of Blackness. In a nation once proclaimed to be a "racial democracy," this research helps to highlight the complications of creating a Black identity amid active Black erasure.
