- 요약Psychiatric disorders are a leading cause of disability in young people and affect up to 1 in 5 adolescents in the United States. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for reducing symptoms, but shortcomings of psychiatric nosology limit the reliability of diagnosis. To address this issue, there is a need for more accurate models of the structure of psychopathology that can elucidate the relationship between etiological variables and disorders, enabling targeted prevention efforts. An especially promising predictor of psychopathology is temperament, or dispositions present from infancy that influence activity, reactivity, emotionality, and sociability, and that include broad individual differences in the expression of affect. This dissertation delineates the latent structure of mental disorders in a large community sample of adolescents. Next, we examine whether temperament in middle childhood, controlling for early-emerging symptoms of psychopathology, predicts later higher-order factors of psychopathology. An exploratory structural equation model (ESEM) revealed a correlated factors model with internalizing and externalizing factors as the most parsimonious fit for the data. However, a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) specifying a general factor of psychopathology in addition to lower-order internalizing and externalizing factors additionally fit the data well. Early temperament broadly predicted the higher and lower-order factors of later psychopathology. However, temperament had little predictive power over and above early emerging symptoms of psychopathology. A longitudinal correlated factors model showed high stability of internalizing and externalizing factors from childhood to adolescence, despite rapid biological and behavioral changes in adolescence and increased incidence of psychopathology. These findings support the utility of hierarchical modeling to characterize symptoms of psychopathology, with compelling implications extending to both research and clinical domains. Further, temperament, particularly effortful control, represents a valuable treatment target with the potential to broadly reduce the impact of common psychological symptoms in youth.
