- 요약This dissertation investigates the social history encapsulated within the realm of political cartoons in Tunisia, spanning from the onset of French occupation in 1881 to the contemporary landscape of 2023. Through a close analysis of a diverse body of selected political cartoons sourced from Tunisian newspapers, and online websites, this research endeavors to explore the complex historical narratives woven within these visual expressions.Divided into five chapters, each corresponding to pivotal periods in Tunisia's history, this study scrutinizes the evolution of political cartoons as both mirrors and catalysts of societal change. From the fervent aspirations of independence to the tumultuous echoes of the Arab Spring and its aftermath, each chapter offers a view of Tunisia's socio-political landscape through the lens of graphic satire. Employing a methodological framework grounded in visual culture theories and careful visual analysis, this research dissects each cartoon, illuminating the underlying themes and stylistic nuances unique to each cartoon. Beyond mere caricatures, these cartoons emerge as potent artifacts, offering profound insights into the social history of Tunisian society at various historical junctures. Central to the findings of this study are the multi-faceted ways in which political cartoons both mirror and help to catalyze social change. Across crises and upheavals, these artists persistently wield their pens as instruments of dissent, using humor and satire to subvert authoritarian narratives and amplify the voices of the marginalized. This dissertation underscores the invaluable role of political cartoons as a dynamic and alternative material for historical inquiry. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, these visual narratives serve as invaluable repositories of social history, offering a nuanced and multifaceted understanding of Tunisia's political, social, and economic trajectory.
