- 요약Although dreaming is emblematic of our sleeping experiences, many fundamental questions about dreaming remain unanswered. In part, progress has been hindered by methodological challenges historically facing dream research such as limitations of retrospective reports and difficulty systematically manipulating dreams. Here, we describe four studies using two-way communication with dreamers in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep to study how dreams are generated and what functions they may serve. First, we showed it is possible to dialogue with dreamers in real time. We posed questions, such as softly spoken math problems, to dreamers aware of dreaming. These lucid dreamers responded correctly using objectively verifiable signals, such as specific patterns of eye movements. We next explored how visual percepts, so central to dreams, are generated in the brain. Dreamers were tasked with opening and closing their dream-eyes and reporting on their visual percepts in real time, and we found alterations in visual system functioning during dreams compared to wake. Next, we succeeded in the longstanding challenge of randomly assigning dreams of specific memories, a critical step for testing putative functions of dreaming. We induced dreams of specific unsolved puzzles and found that dreaming can promote creative problem solving. Finally, we extended our method to demonstrate dialogue with non-lucid dreamers. We presented sounds to trigger dreams of one of two tasks, each with a distinctive respiratory signature. By measuring airflow during sleep, we objectively verified dreams of the assigned task. In sum, these new methods can shed new light on age-old theories of why we dream.
