- 요약This dissertation contains three self-contained essays on the economics of transportation. Throughout these chapters, I investigate the role that the industrial organization of the transportation and logistics sectors exert in shaping inter-regional interactions. Special attention is paid to how the actors within these sectors shape trade costs.In chapter 1, I study how the forces governing hub location decisions in distribution networks influence international bilateral trade costs. Using data from a large humanitarian aid organization that operates a global distribution network of warehouses, I find that transportation costs between warehouses are about 30% lower on average than are those associated with final deliveries. I then embed a logistics organization's hub location problem within a quantitative model of international trade. I quantify the model using data from the humanitarian aid organization. I find that the structure of the optimal network is an important determinant for the inter-regional trade costs that the organization faces. Perturbing the network leads to an increase in average trade costs of between 10-20%. Moreover, removing the inter-warehouse discount results in a 75% increase in bilateral trade costs.In chapter 2, together with coauthors, we study how economies of scope in transportation shape domestic trade and aggregate welfare. Focusing on freight trucking in India we investigate how shipments move between regions. We find that transporters often collect multiple shipments issued by distinct sellers before delivering to destinations located close together. We argue that there exist economies of scope in transportation if this behaviour, grouping transactions together into fewer shipments, allows transporters to economize on fixed transport costs. We develop a quantitative trade model where the transportation sector permits economies of scope. Bilateral trade costs are endogenous to the routing choices made by heterogeneous transporters. When transporters find it profitable to exploit economies of scope by grouping shipments, they improve both the extensive and intensive margins of domestic trade. On one hand, the grouped shipments increase firms' access to destinations. On the other, the presence of route choice heterogeneity in the model implies that indirect routes lower average trade costs. We quantify the effect of economies of scope in transportation on broader economic outcomes and show that domestic trade flows would be 32% lower if transporters did not leverage economies of scope in transportation.Finally, in chapter 3, together with coauthors, we investigate the determinants of transport costs for road freight transportation in low and middle income countries. This paper studies patterns and determinants of road freight transport costs across 60 developing countries using a proprietary dataset of transport contracts procured by the same entity. This is, to our knowledge, the largest database of consistently measured overland freight transport costs in the literature. We use this data to document a high degree of variability in overland trucking rates both within and across countries. We show that characteristics of the shipment, origin, destination, and route influence transport costs. Factors like scale, infrastructure availability, conflict, and the opportunity for backhaul are all important. We also investigate the role of international borders in shaping freight rates and find a significant border effect: unit transport costs are about 70% larger when crossing an international border.
