- 요약Fuelwood and solid fuel use remain prevalent in low-income countries like Nepal and Malawi, where rural communities face a slow transition to cleaner energy alternatives. Despite the global push toward sustainable energy, underdeveloped rural settings encounter significant challenges in adopting modern cooking fuels, largely due to socioeconomic barriers, resource governance issues, and cultural factors. Continued reliance on biomass fuels like fuelwood in these regions has severe health implications, particularly through household air pollution, which is a leading cause of respiratory diseases among the rural poor. This dissertation examines the critical role of community forestry user groups (CFUGs), household energy transitions, and the health impacts of biomass fuel use, focusing on diverse rural settings in Nepal and Malawi. Specifically, it explores how household and community factors influence solid fuel use in Nepal, and the health implications of biomass fuel use in Malawi. Using household survey data, this dissertation provides insights from three chapters that enhance the understanding of the factors shaping fuelwood use and energy transitions. First, it investigates how direct engagement in CFUGs influences household fuelwood dependency and consumption patterns in rural Nepal, emphasizing caste as a moderating factor. Second, it explores the dynamics of household energy transitions in rural Nepal, focusing on the roles of household and community-level factors in the adoption of clean cooking fuels. Lastly, it shifts focus to Malawi, where the study analyzes the association between household air pollution from biomass fuel use and health outcomes in ultra-poor communities.The dissertation reveals that household energy transitions in rural Nepal are gradual, non-linear, and influenced by various factors. While wealth, education, and infrastructure generally promote cleaner fuel use, households often revert to polluting fuels due to economic or infrastructural constraints, challenging the traditional energy ladder model. Additionally, community-level factors, such as the proportion of educated women, resource access and overall community wealth, emphasize the significant roles of collective gender empowerment and broader community well-being in promoting household energy transitions. The influence of community forestry on household energy decision is also evident as the dissertation findings demonstrate active engagement in resource management plays a more influential role in fuelwood dependence compared to roles in decision-making bodies. Additionally, caste dynamics further shape reliance on fuelwood, with cultural practices in rural Nepal reinforcing this dependence. In Malawi, the study highlights the persistent reliance on biomass fuels among ultra-poor households, with a strong association between crop residue use and adverse respiratory and eye health outcomes. However, other factors typically associated with household air pollution exposure, such as stove type and cooking location, did not show significant effects. This study did not find measurable health benefits from the use of the Chitetezo Mbaula, an improved cookstove. However, realizing the potential health benefits of improved cookstoves may require a longer time frame, as such benefits are likely to emerge gradually with sustained use and behavioral adaptation, and interventions prioritizing changes in cooking fuel may offer more immediate health improvements for ultra-poor communities. The findings of this dissertation demonstrate the importance of local resource governance and household and community characteristics in shaping energy use and transitions, as well as the critical need to address health risks associated with sustained biomass fuel dependency. These findings carry important policy implications for advancing sustainable energy transitions and enhancing public health in low-resource environments. They underscore the need for targeted interventions that address the unique challenges faced by communities in these settings, focusing on both cleaner energy access and health outcomes in vulnerable populations.
