- 요약Increasing the production of small grains in the North Central United States (US) is beneficial for growers ecologically, financially, and socially. Ecologically, adding in additional crops to a rotation promotes more diversity, allows for winter ground cover, and can help hold nutrients on the landscape. Financially, growers can spread their risk across more crops and take advantage of niche markets. Socially, growers can contribute more to local food systems. However, regionalization in small grain production limits grower options and restricts many locally produced foods and food ingredients. Other limitations to diversifying crop rotations with small grains include a lack of recommendations for some crops like hybrid rye. Through trials evaluating the nitrogen response of hybrid rye as both a forage and grain crop and the efficacy of winter wheat seed treatments, this project aims to address the questions surrounding small grains expansion and management in the North Central US. Current agricultural policy in the US forces farmers into undiversified systems focused on one or two monocrops. Market pressures, supply chain issues, and rising input costs have put extreme pressures on farmers. This has led to another major problem facing rural communities, rising levels of distress and suicide amongst farmers. The increasingly volatile nature of farming combined with the immense risk farmers take on adds to the isolation that already exists in rural communities. Rural communities are less likely to have adequate access to mental health care than their urban counterparts and there is a high level of stigma attached to seeking help. This project aims to review current initiatives on combating rural distress and use evidence-based policy recommendations to find a productive way forward for rural communities.
