- 요약In recent years, opera companies and concert venues have shown interest in programming Spanish classical music by Latin American composers. In the 2023-2024 season, the Metropolitan Opera presented Florencia en las Amazonas by Mexican composer Daniel Catan, while companies such as Arizona Opera, Austin Lyric Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Minnesota Opera, San Diego Opera and Opera San Antonio have all programmed various mariachi operas such as El Pasado Nunca se Termina and Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, also by a famous Mexican composer and arranger of popular music, Jose "Pepe" Martinez. While interest in Spanish vocal literature has begun to address issues with representation in opera, the Spanish Caribbean continues to be a region in which its music rarely gets recognition. This research aims to increase awareness of classical music from the Spanish Caribbean, particularly the island of Puerto Rico, by specifically focusing on vocal works by pianist and composer Narciso Figueroa. This paper seeks to contribute information about this integral Puerto Rican composer, foster performances of Puerto Rican vocal works, and spur further research into this important and often overlooked repertoire. This document will also serve as a performance guide to give access to and aid in performances of Puerto Rican art songs by foreign singers, bringing Puerto Rican music into the universal art song canon. The performance guide includes a table of the International Phonetic Alphabet for the Spanish language, an explanation of the Caribbean consonant variants, which are pertinent for the performance of these songs, IPA transcriptions for the text of each song along with translations, companion recordings of the pronunciation for each song, and a brief musical analysis of each piece.Despite my best intentions to publish the accompanying scores with this study, various copyright issues have made this impossible. I hope that this dissertation will provide the basis for a resolution and that these works will soon be available for performance and educational purposes.
