- 요약Information is a fundamental part of how individuals make choices, but its role is often ignored or underrepresented in economic models. In this dissertation, I examine the role and impact of information constraints in two real-world, intersecting contexts: the economics of health care and transportation.In the first chapter, I examine differences in information ascertained by health care clinicians across visit modalities for problem-oriented outpatient care before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using claims data from a large insurance provider in the United States, I find that patients who receive telehealth in place of in-person care are more likely to experience a subsequent ED visit as well as death within six months, which I then match with theory to quantify the impact of differences in clinician capability of acquiring information about the patient health status across visit modalities.In the second chapter, I study the impact of state-level price transparency websites in Arizona and Iowa by using inpatient records to examine how distances traveled to care by patients change as access to these tools changes over time. I find that these price transparency tools have little to no impact on distance to care, suggesting that any pricing information gained via access to price transparency tools has not led to a significant change in willingness to shop for health care.In the third and final chapter of my dissertation, I, alongside Emerson Melo and Jorge Lorca, study the property of choice aversion in individual routing decisions over transportation networks. We construct a model that mathematically characterizes the behavioral economics of choice aversion by penalizing additional choices in a choice set. We demonstrate that this economic model predicts routing behavior as well as other state-of-the-art routing models that lack clear interpretations and explore some of the welfare properties that our model generates, as well as establishing model validity on traffic data from Sweden.
